Last updated 8/8/2004

Since the birth of our round yellow redeemer, there have been many people, motivated by greed, boredom, or simply a desire to program, who have attempted to create a false Pac-Man. Should these people be praised for attempting to preserve the glory of Pac-Man? Or should they be condemned, accused of Marioism, whipped, beaten, and burned at the stake, with a hard copy of their code as kindling? Whatever their fate, these programmers have gone and made a hell of a lot of Pac-Man rip-offs, clones, and wannabes, and I've never seen anybody attempt to catalog them all. So I'm gonna give it a shot.

Obviously, this list is about as far from complete as a list can be. I need help. So if you notice that YOUR favorite Pac-Man ripoff is missing, don't just scream "HEY!! I can't believe that moron forgot Cataract-Man! I'll kill him!!" because I can't hear you scream from here. Instead, send me e-mail. Also, send me e-mail if you have more info about a game that's already on the list. I have a lot of question marks on here and I'd really like to get rid of them all.

Click here to give me clone info or to report dead links...I need your help!!!

Game Title

    Description

Year Released

Platform

3-D Frog Man

(See also 3D Maze Man) This is identical...*IDENTICAL* to 3D Maze Man, except you're a frog instead of a Pac-Man-looking thing, the levels are different, and you're eating bugs instead of dots. You can probably find this for under $15, or grab it directly from RomTech if they still have it.

1998

Windows

3D Maze Man

(See also "3-D Frog Man") A scrolling 3D Pac-Man game with elaborate backgrounds, hills and valleys in the mazes, and lots of power-ups and interesting features like the ability to jump (stolen from Pac-Mania, although you can't jump over the ghosts,) speed-up arrows (stolen from Pac-Man arrangement,) keys and locks (stolen from Super Pac-Man,) and "Death Tiles" (stolen from a sadistic early version of checkers, I assume.) This game is a lot of fun, but FAR too easy. You can probably find this in the cheapy section of Electronics Boutique, or you can grab it directly from RomTech for under $20.

1998

Windows

3D Maze Man: Adventures in Winter Wonderland

10 new wintery-lookin' 3D Maze Man levels! And this time, he's wearing a silly-looking santa hat!

A strange one...the maze looks like a messed-up grid and your character alternates between a monkey and a paint roller. Rather than energizers, your weapon is a "jump" button, which makes all of your enemies jump for a moment (during which time they are harmless.)

Scrolling-maze Pac-Man game with Pov-Ray rendered graphics, five different "Chompster" characters, Vertical and horizontal scrolling mazes, a final boss (!!), 60 mazes + secret bonus mazes, a between-level map ala Donkey Kong Country, powerups, powerdowns, bonus point prizes, and a corny storyline. Apparently allows you to plug in your own midi files for background music! Available from the official page here. Apparently doesn't run too well on newer computers.

1997

MS-DOS

Clean Sweep

You're a bank president, using your vaccuum cleaner to recover money (dots) while avoiding "evil thieves" (ghosts.) Interesting twist:  The vaccuum can only hold so much, so every once in a while you have to empty it!

1982

Vectrex

Crapman

This game has normal Pacman play, but two things are different. The playing field scrolls up and down to give a bigger playing field. And it has a 2 player mode. The players play in the same screen, but when they go too far away from each other, the screen splits to have them play in different windows, until they get back together again. Very different.

Gobble-Man

If you have an older PC, this is your game. Very smooth. PC Squeaker sounds. The intro is very similar to the Ms. Pac-Man intro, and the READY! music is from an older PC Pac-Man game, the name of which I can't remember.

1991

MS-DOS

Gobbler

This Pac-Man wannabe has far too many dots on the screen, and ghosts turn GREEN instead of blue. This is especially annoying because one of the ghosts is green all the time, even when he's NOT edible. Not the worst I've seen...but definitely not up there among my favorites.

Grandpa Pac-Man

In this freeware game, Pac-Man is old and grey. Very grey. And the ghosts aren't looking too good either. But the battle continues. The gameplay is very similar to Pac-Man, with guns and bombs added along with some new intermissions. There are a few annoying little quirks in this game, but it's fun. It's obviously designed to look like it's being run on an arcade machine. Click here to visit the author's page and download this game.

Mr. Muncher

A Pac-Man clone on a keychain from Senario Games. Has hard-to-see scrolling screens and your character looks like a CD. The game includes horribly out-of-tune music, but a really nifty crunching sound when Mr. Chomper eats dots. Helpful directions on the back of the blister pack state that there are four difficultly levels: "Maze Low Difficulty Level," "Maze High Difficulty Level," "Chomp Moving - Low Difficulty Level," and "Chomp Moving - High Difficulty Level." It also informs the reader of such important details as "LEFT: Move Mr. Chomper to left," "RIGHT: Move Mr. Chomper to right," and "NOTE: Mr. Chomper will flash after eating 'Power Dot.' This allows him to eat ghosts." Made in China! Seriously!

A CP/M (Damn, I feel old...) Pac-Man game using character graphics, but rather than simply using one-character players and enemies, this one tried to have a BIG Pac-guy and BIG ghosts built from many characters. Unfortunately, the machines at the time couldn't take it, so this game is WAAAY too slow.

?

Z-100 CP/M

Munchman

In this game, a little green blob makes links and eats different characters. The power pellets are shaped like little states of Texas. There are twenty different levels before it starts over with 20 different characters to eat as well. In the last level, Munchman eats the chain (each piece look like the game's power pellets) until he is manuvering in an invisible screen. For a while, Munchman came free with the purchase of a TI-99 4/A. Click here to see a screen shot.

Pac-PC / Pac-PC II

This is the best Freeware Pac-Man game I've ever seen, and may in fact be cloned from Pac-Man's actual DNA. The samples are from the original coin-op, and the ghosts' patterns are well done. This is as close to the original as you can get, barring emulation. I think even Ms. Pac-Man would do a double-take if she saw Pac-PC. Click here to visit the author's page.

PacVenture - Pac's Oddysee

This is a 3-D Pac-Man game similar to Pac-Mania, but with far better graphics, some GREAT animated sequences, and a PLOT! The beautiful "Ms. Pac" has been kidnapped by the Ghost King, and you must travel through seven worlds to save her. You can jump, like in Pac-Mania, and Pac-Man says "Boing!" when you do, which is neat. But even better is the fact that ghosts SCREAM when you eat them! The version I played was VERY buggy...hopefully there's a new version either available or in the works since I LOVE the game. Freeware, available from the Chechesoft web site

PC-Man

Shareware. No sound. Three different mazes, the first one similar to the original Pac-Man. The major problem is that the ghosts become evil again even before they stop flashing (so you can be killed by a blue ghost). Ghost patterns are somewhat predictable - they will always travel directly toward you on the shortest path. This means at certain points there is no escape, and at other times, you can trap them.

Plaque Man

Yet another Pac-Man game promoting oral hygiene (see "Jawbreaker" above!) You are a toothbrush on a maze full of teeth, and every time you go over a tooth with a cavity, the cavity dissapears. Instead of ghosts, there are weird blobs and every time they go over a tooth, they add a cavity. If a tooth has more than 3 cavities, it disappears. The object is to clean all of the teeth, and every clean tooth left over awards point bonuses or something.

Shark Attack

You're a diver, the dots are pearls, and sharks are after you. Rather than following you ghost-like through the maze, however, the sharks swim horizontally from one edge of the screen to the other, ignoring the walls of the maze. The control in this game is absolutely horrible...it's very easy for your diver to get "caught" in a wall. This game was originally called "Lockjaw," but Apollo had to change the name for legal reasons (The name "Lockjaw" was somehow considered a "Jaws" ripoff.) Apparently, there are a few minor programming differences between the original "Lockjaw" and "Shark Attack."

1982

Atari 2600

Snack Attack

In this bizarre Pac-Man wannabe from Datamost, the hero is a whale, complete with odd-shaped mouth and waving tail, and the enemies are...well, they sure as hell look like ghosts. The interesting thing about this particular game is that your whale can go through maze walls of a certain color, but your enemies can't. There are also maze walls of another color for which the reverse is true. In addition, this game has multiple mazes. The speed gets progressively faster throughout the game, and ultimately becomes so insane that gameplay is impossible.

A very faithful rendition of the arcade classic, with a few differences: The maze was green, the bonus fruits were different items, like spiders and cacti, and the ghosts had different names (yes, it even had the character/nickname screen). You're a triceratops racing around a maze gathering eggs (a.k.a. dots.) One-eyed cavemen called Trogs chase you around, trying to eat you. You can also fall off the sides of the screen. The power pellets are pinapples which turn you into a T-Rex so you can eat the cavemen. There are also additional power-ups that let you shoot fire or freeze the Trogs in ice. The graphics look kinda like claymation.

Nice Java Pac-Man wannabe from Pogo games! You control a robot, cleaning up tools and debris in pipes, left behind by workers. But "Pipe Dwellers" are after you for some reason, and you must avoid them! Or pick up a battery, which chargers your robot and allows you to shock the Pipe Dwellers. Play it online right now by clicking here! Nice gameplay...the sound is also impressive, but gets annoying after a while.

Turbo-Man

You're a teardrop, and your enemies are octopi (the natural enemy of the teardrop.) In addition to power pellets (which make the octopi turn blue,) you also have a TURBO button which allows your teardrop to run real fast, but you can't eat dots while you're running.
